The food design takes inspiration from the Superflat Art Movement, in which artists put low-level pop cultural junk on pedestals and present it as high-end art to comment on consumerism, fast urban development, and Japanese obsession with the idea of the juvenile at the beginning of the 2000s. Wagashi(和菓子) is a Japanese traditional dessert that represents “the five sense”, takes the best material of the season, and expire fast. Have to be tasted before it goes bad. We think the core idea of Superflat is highly relevant in nowadays world with the fast growth/changes brought by technologies and gentrification, and other complex issues coming with it. We aim to take abstract ideas and symbolize them in the food itself, bringing enjoyment to the audience same time as reflections. WAGASHI AS THE FORM Wagashi are traditional Japanese desserts known also as the “art of the five senses.” With their beautiful design, delicate sweetness, and pleasant taste, they offer a layer-upon-layer of enjoyment. One by one, each wagashi sets a seasonal scene, taking the best material of the season and expiring fast. As we are trying to simplify complex issues into edible forms, symbolism comes in handy. Traditional wagashi takes seasonal themes and motifs to complete its storytelling with one single object. They manifest through water, leaving behind iridescent residues that map their movements. The fountains, ancient symbols of life, serve as feeding grounds for these entities. When humans reconnect through authentic touch, their biometric data nourishes the guardians, activating dormant ecological processes. The guardians respond instinctively, purifying watersheds and regenerating soil. Their traces—metallic residues,and crystalline fragments—reveal patterns of emergent intelligence rather than deliberate communication. This film explores the symbiosis between human intimacy and primitive yet powerful forms of embodied intelligence, suggesting that our future might lie not in advanced technology but in re-connection with ancient, networked life forms that predate human consciousness. Version 1.0 PLANT CARE APPARATUSThe initial concept for this prototype was to develop an input/output system wherein human biometric data—specifically touch, temperature, and pulse—would be collected through sensors and subsequently translated into mechanical actions. In the context of this prototype—where human touch serves as the catalyst for activating plant care systems—the fountain functions not merely as an aesthetic element, but as a metaphor for the sustaining interdependence between humans and the ecosystem. By positioning human touch as the initiator of nurturing actions, the project seeks to suggest broader frameworks of ecological guardianship and collective responsibility for the living environment. RITUALIZATION OF TOUCH To cultivate meaningful interaction around this speculative artifact, touch was conceptualized not simply as a casual input, but as a ritualized act. Recognizing that ritual practices often transform everyday gestures into acts of intention and reverence, I conducted research into traditional offering objects, such as those found in Japanese Buddhist rituals and Indonesian Hindu ceremonies. The goal was to integrate these ceremonial forms with the functional demands of a fountain—envisioned here as a "feeding ground" for the guardians. Through research into a wide range of traditional offering artifacts and historical fountain designs, I synthesized references into a final structure that is geometric and minimalistic, yet intentionally softened with subtle art deco flourishes. This aesthetic strategy was employed to evoke a sense of sentimental familiarity: an object that appears as though it could belong to an existing lineage of artifacts, yet resists full recognition. Once finalized, the 3D model was printed and subjected to post-processing: the surface was primed, carefully sanded to achieve a smooth finish, and painted with a grain-textured paint, followed by the application of a matte, waterproof sealant to enhance durability. Following the completion of the form, the internal tubing and water pump components were wired and installed within the fountain structure. Waterproof clay was initially employed as an adhesive and sealant between structural layers. However, during the first test run, the rigidity of the tubing exerted excessive pressure, resulting in the clay seals cracking and destabilizing the overall assembly. This thesis examines structured play as a cultural technology for anticipating the future. Systems such as chess engines, AI prediction models, and strategic simulations are widely trusted as rational tools for forecasting, yet they operate through the same underlying mechanism as older divinatory practices: pattern recognition derived from historical archives. Both translate accumulated past events into probabilistic guidance about what may come next.The project explores this shared logic through a chess-based prototype that makes predictive computation perceptible rather than hidden. Instead of presenting a single optimal answer, the system exposes evaluation, risk, and suggestion as signals the player must interpret. Prediction is reframed as a process of reading patterns and navigating probability rather than receiving certainty.In this framework, structured play functions less as prophecy and more as rehearsal. Predictive systems reorganize historical patterns to shape present decisions, training participants to recognize recurrence, constraint, and uncertainty. If a chess engine trained on my own games already knows my probable next move, what happens when that prediction is shown to my opponent — while I remain blind to it? The first prototype was simple: an 8×8 LED matrix in a chrome shell, sitting between me and whoever I was playing, lighting up my most likely next move for them to see. I typed moves into Terminal; the board responded. No ritual framing, no printed readings — just the prediction, made visible. Playtesting with two cohorts revealed something unexpected. Novice players treated the prediction as instruction — a way to orient themselves in a system they couldn't yet read. Experienced players used it differently: they were more interested in the inaccuracies than the accurate predictions. One opponent told me that through the moments the compass was wrong — when I played offscript — she got to know me as a person better than through any correct prediction. The glitches weren't failures. They were the person behind the pattern becoming visible. Both cohorts found reassurance in the machine regardless of its accuracy. That was the finding that mattered: the value wasn't in being right. The printer triggers only at moments of consequence — when a player deviates from the compass suggestion, or makes a blunder, sacrifice, or brilliant move. Each slip is earned rather than given. Four participants playtested the complete system. No two used it the same way. One player ignored the win probability display entirely — she didn't want the numbers to discourage her — and used the compass only retrospectively to check moves she'd already made. Another treated the compass and probability display as two friends giving him advice, consulting both to see if they agreed before trusting himself. A third barely looked at the hardware at all, reading every printed slip carefully, connecting its language to her playing style and then to her personality more broadly: who am I in chess equals who am I in life, she said, unprompted. The sharpest finding came from the most experienced player. After receiving a reading, she went through the entire slip trying to match its language to specific moves. The tonal framing alone — positive or negative — convinced her that certain moves had been correct and others wrong, even when the text had no direct relationship to the engine's evaluation. She described it as definitive. The system wasn't describing her moves accurately. It is more based on one’s memory, senses and feelings, instead of geographic facts. For this Unity project, I observed a strip of Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, and drew a psychogeographic map based on my interpretation of the neighborhood. This is a project done at ArtCenter MDP, Dev Studio 1. With the rest of the class’s work, we form a complete mental map of Sunset Boulevard.&nbsp; Background LOCATION The part of street I oberved starts from 107 North Canyon View Drive and ends in 3 South Benley Avenue. It is 2.2 miles long, 40 mins to an hour walking distance. The area includes Brentwood Heights, an upper-middle class residential neighborhood. However, not satisfied with the situation, I went on Zillow. Only to find more pictures of the hedges, no houses in sight, only the prices. I set out to question the nature of bias in both historical and contemporary facial analysis systems.For this project specifically, I aim to address this tendency of using facial features as means to judge characters and potentially use it for future casting and damage prevention. Not only to highlights how both traditional and modern systems make assumptions about people based on facial features, I also aim to look for alternative to utilize but subvert this historically layered approach. explores the tension between institutionalized intimacy and radical critique by merging two contrasting texts: excerpts from The Coming Insurrection—a political manifesto challenging traditional family and romantic structures as instruments of control—and articles from the Chinese Marriage Law. Through this juxtaposition, the work interrogates how legal and emotional languages reinforce or resist systemic power. The final form is a collaborative wearable poster made from scrolls of printed and marked-up texts, sewn together to resemble the structure of ancient Chinese criminal restraints. Two individuals must wear the piece together, their bodies literally entangled in the legal and ideological binds of love and law. Depending on their orientation, one reads from The Coming Insurrection, the other from the Marriage Law—forcing them into a slow, close, and partial reading of both. Intimacy here becomes both a constraint and a point of resistance. Process I began by isolating legal text from the marriage law, then selectively redacted key phrases using markers in varying shades of grayscale and halftone patterns. This manipulation served both to obscure and emphasize—drawing attention to gendered language, implicit hierarchies, and mechanisms of social control embedded in bureaucratic speech. The choice to work with redaction and visual noise was deliberate, reflecting the friction between legibility and denial, presence and erasure. <img width="1338" height="1432" width_o="1338" original publication, check out:&nbsp;https://www.frannychoi.com/books Soft Science: A Cyborg Feminist Poem Soft Science is a collection of poems written by Franny Choi, it deals with technology and language relationship with technology, as well as themes of identity, which this interactive multimedia chatbot is inspired from. Taking inspiration from Franny’s work, especially the poems which are written in the structure of a Turing Test conversation, this audio-visual chatbot took those prompts, and answered with response in text and video format which generated by pre-trained deep learning models The installation consists of a charbot powered by a pre-trained deep learning modal with inputs from soft science poem, a cherry mechanical keyboard for typing interaction phase, a Macbook Pro as computing center and video display, and a vintage Samsung CRT monitor as chatbox dialogue display. During the interaction, we encouraged participants to type freely-formed questions to chatbot as if they were running a turing test. As a result, the chatbot would analyze subjects’ input, and generate answers from trained models. Specifically, we manually design some video answers as breakpoints for certain questions to increase the level of participants' immersiveness and machine intelligence.&nbsp; Installation INTRODUCTION Inspired by the Turing Test, the chatbot shapes an unique interactive testing experience for the audience. Next, we vectorize our text data corpus by tokenizer and remove punctuations and unrelated words. Then we trained our neural network architecture for the proposed model, and implemented a chat function by calculating the similarity between the received inputs and training data category. The chatbot will then return answers from the category with highest confidence. Video For the video clips, we took the excerpts from the poems, cut, analyze and reorganize them into chronicle fashion to complete the Turing Test.
